Do The Traffic Officers/Meter Readers Quit Before The Meters Stop Working?

Parkazine reader Thomas sent in this great question: "Do you know the quitting time of the meter persons in queens? Sometimes I park at 4:00 PM in Queens at a meter that is effective until 7:00 PM. If I feed the meter for just one hour, am I reasonably safe from getting a ticket from 5-7PM?? Thank you."

Park Without Paying Almost Anywhere In NYC On Thanksgiving

Street parking on Thanksgiving Day can be more assessable than you might think. Many people don't realize that on major national holidays (including Thanksgiving Day), not only alternate side of the street regulations but almost all street parking regulations and all parking meters are suspended. This means that not only can you park at meters for free, but you can basically park anywhere without a problem UNLESS it is a place where street parking is NEVER allowed (i.e., if the sign says "No Parking Anytime", "No Standing Anytime" or "No Stopping Anytime").

Tips On Where To Park Your Car When Visiting Manhattan On Thanksgiving:

* Since the parade starts at 77th Street and Central Park West, a little bit North of this area should be a great place to find street parking.

* Since the parade ends at 34th Street and 7th Avenue, a little bit Sousth of this area

What Happens When You Feed a Muni-Meter or a Regular Parking Meter?

Parkazine reader Gene emailed me these great questions: "Is there a difference between muni meter feeding and regular meter feeding? Can ticket writers tell when somebody is feeding a muni meter more than they can tell when somebody is feeding a regular meter? I just read an article that in a neighborhood a study showed that 39% of the regular meters were being fed all day long by merchants which kept others from parking and somebody was asking for Muni Meters to prevent meter feeding? Do the ticket writers keep track of who is parking better at a muni meter than at a regular meter? And do the ticket writers then issue tickets to muni meter feeders and not issue tickets to regular meter feeders?"

Residents Who Park Long Term Can Save On Parking Tax Surcharges

Residents of Manhattan who own and have registered their motor vehicle to a Manhattan address and park in long-term, rented space may be eligible for an exemption from the additional New York City 8 percent surtax levied on Manhattan parking space rentals.

For those who qualify, the surtax will be at a reduced rate of 10.375% instead of the standard 18.375%. This surtax is actually part of the New York City and New York State shared Sales and Use Tax, but most people call it the Manhattan Resident Parking Tax. How Dan and I Beat A Confusing NYC Parking Ticket?

Parkazine reader Dan contacted me through our blog about an unfair NYC parking ticket that he received. He purchased our inexpensive 1-on-1 phone consultation with me; check out what happened:

Dan: "I got a ticket for parking on Sunday on 59th Street East of York Ave, on N/E corner. Sign at corner said No Standing Mon - Fri (4-7 PM), Sign at middle of dead end block said No Standing Anytime. I went for a hearing. Hearing officer said computer has it as "No Parking Anytime." He said my pics must be for York even though I had a pic on the same signpost, York Ave side, saying "No Standing 7-7, except Sundays." Officer told me to come back with pics of the whole block. If I did that, it would show the No standing Anytime sign, which conflicts with the one I was right next to at the corner: No Standing M- F. Is it worth going back? Does the more restrictive sign automatically supercede a less restrictive sign? Also, would I have a better chance doing it by mail, since I was told the hearing officer can only pronounce guilty or not-guilty with full fine? It was Sunday. The sign by my car said M-F, and another sign down the block said Anytime. Does that make me guilty?"

Understanding When You Can and Can't Park at Bus Stop Signs

Parkazine reader Richard sent us this great question:

"On the East side of Park Ave between 17th and 18th St. in Manhattan, the bus stop at the corner has the sign somewhat longer than a car length from the intersection which leaves just enough room for a car to park in front of the bus stop. On weekends is it legal to park there, if so will the meter maids know it?"

What Does "No Standing" Really Mean??

Parkazine reader Elizabeth sent us this great question:

"I don’t totally understand "no standing". Can you park at this sign "no standing 8am-6pm (M,W,F)/no parking 10am-1130am (M & Th)? Does this mean you can park after 11:30 am even though it says you can’t stand there from 8-6? If a sign says no standing, can you park there?"
